Nokia’s DVB-H-equipped N77 starts shipping

Filed under:

We first caught wind of Nokia’s N77 handset all the way back in February, but those in Finland should now be able to actually get their hands on it, with those in India and Vietnam set to follow later this month. The big selling point here is the handset’s DVB-H mobile TV capabilities, which’ll let you watch live TV from a variety of channels, with a program guide also provided to help you out. Otherwise, the phone (or “multimedia computer,” as Nokia insists on calling it) packs a 2.4-inch widescreen display, a 2 megapixel camera, tri-band GSM / EDGE capabilities, and support for MP3, AAC, AAC+, eAAC+ and WMA media. While Nokia isn’t saying as much in this latest announcement, last we heard the N77 would run you €370, or roughly $490.

Intel tactically donates a thousand laptops to Vietnam

Filed under:

In most situations, a donation of a thousand laptops is a pretty awesome thing. But when the donation comes from Intel, a multi-billion dollar corporation with an interest in promoting its low cost laptop line, and the recipient is Vietnam, a nation of 85 million living on less than $3,500 per capita, it’d be a long shot to say that the donation came out of the goodness of the company’s heart. Education minister Nguyen Thien Nhan seems to be happy enough with the deal, saying that Vietnam recognizes the value of technology in the classroom (even if America doesn’t). Frankly, we don’t buy the PR line: it’s not sustainable for Intel to constantly “give away” their machines, so the payoff is inevitably going to be some sort of lock-in by getting there first. Even if the concept of laptops in schools isn’t flawed, this isn’t the way to go about getting them into the hands of students — let alone students from a country that is listed in the mid-hundreds on the GDP rankings.

UK sculptor designs rotating wall for Liverpool

Filed under:

While we’re sure more than a few citizens of Liverpool could think of much more productive ways to spend £450,000 ($887,490), there’s nothing sweeter than turning a wall completely inside out for sculptor Richard Wilson. This uber-expensive piece of art was constructed at the former Yates’s Wine Lodge building, and a massive oval shaped section of the building’s exterior now rotates around and gives onlookers a glimpse of the interior without ever stepping foot inside. Dubbed Turning The Place Over, the installation will officially launch on June 20th and will run until the end of next year, and while we can’t deny that this here project was more about making jaws drop than actually improving the city center, it’s certainly something to look at. Check the video after the jump.
