Pentax celebrates with gold-accented K10D GP DSLR

Filed under:

What do you do if your camera takes home the prestigious Camera Grand Prix 2007 award? Why, you kick out a limited run of 5,000 units to let everyone know about it, that’s what. Pentax is proving quite the celebratory bunch, as it has found yet another reason to don the party hat and unveil a fancy looking (but otherwise standard) K10D. The Grand Prix Package comes with the body, a battery grip, a commemorative strap, and the latest firmware pre-installed, and Pentax even applied a special dark brown rubber to the body to make sure it stood out. Additionally, a few logos and indicators are gilded to signify the limited-edition status, and the prominent serial number on each one completes the package. Don’t expect to snap one up immediately though, as Pentax is keeping the pricing and available deets on the DL for the time being.

Matsushita to sell Power Pedal robotic legs

Filed under:

Matsushita’s already given us a robotic suit to aid in rehabilitation, but it’s now taking its robo-upgrades even further, busting out a pair of “Power Pedal” robotic legs to give us humans a fighting chance in the inevitable robot uprising… and help disabled and elderly people walk again. Supposedly, the Power Pedals will give you seven times more strength, and be able to maneuver through difficult terrain without tipping over, thanks to their six directions of movement. Matsushita thinks that’ll also make the legs particularly well-suited for use in disaster areas, which would seem to be a likely first test bed, given that they’ll cost a cool 20 million yen ($167k) when they’re available in August. According to Matsushita, however, that’ll come down to just $30,000 by 2015, so start saving up.

Samwell shows off Ruggedbook PC657 UMPC

Joining the slew of other handhelds computers that surfaced at Computex is the Ruggedbook PC657 from Samwell, which does indeed pack a beefy shell to protect the innards from whatever comes its way. The seven-inch UMPC includes a 800 x 600 resolution touchscreen, a 1.2GHz VIA C7M processor, Windows XP Professional, a PCMCIA slot, SDIO / MMC slots, 802.11b/g WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0, a fingerprint scanner, and an integrated camera. Additionally, it’ll handle up to 1GB of RAM, offers up your choice of 30, 60, or 80GB 1.8-inch hard drives if you’re not kosher with the built-in 2GB/4GB/8GB flash storage option, and allows you the luxury of slipping a DVB-H tuner or GPS module into the PC Card slot if you so desire. We hope you weren’t counting on a price or release date directly from the show floor, but do click on for a few more hands-on pictures.

Moneual intros sub-$1000 301 HTPC

You may be rather used to hearing from Moneual every few months or so, but the engineering department has apparently been on top of things lately. A mere three days after witnessing the firm’s colorful lineup of Inovys, the company’s 301 HTPC is being offered up as well, and we must say that the simple, sleek styling is quite attractive. Internally, you’ll notice a water-cooled AMD 64 Athlon X2 4400 handling the processing duties, 2GB of RAM, 7.1-channel audio, dual FireWire ports, a 250GB hard drive, dual-layer DVD writer, HDMI / VGA outputs, five USB 2.0 connectors, Ethernet, and a wireless keyboard / remote to keep things tidy. Most impressive, however, is the price, as this decently-spec’d media PC will only run you $995 (sans any TV tuning abilities, of course).
