Dell confirms XPS m1330 and Inspiron laptops — and 22 other “confessions”

Filed under:

Dell has a new post titled “Dell’s 23 confessions” up on their official Direct2Dell blog. The fact that Dell’s Digital Media Manager, Lionel Menchaca apologizes for some embarrassingly public missteps made recently makes the piece worthy on its own. However, one of our favorite disclosures has to be confession number 9 where Dell confirms both the new XPS m1330 and Inspiron series of laptops coming “later this month.” We must say, Dell’s frank, open discussion with the consumer community is certainly refreshing and — for good or for bad — stands in stark contrast to the brutal, oneway flow of information out of Apple. Speaking of which, confession number 19 states, “If Steve Jobs ever changes his tune on OS X, we’d probably offer it too.” Not that that’s going to happen mind you.

Robot to be master of ceremonies at South Korean wedding

Filed under:

Getting a robot to host a wedding, an event that many see as the ultimate demonstration of humanity, may seem a little weird to some, but to Seok Gyeong-Jae, one of the designers of Tiro the robot, it’s perfectly natural. Gyeong-Jae is soon to be married in Daejeon (around 80 miles from Seoul), with Tiro taking the role of master of ceremonies. In order to completely, 100% remove any possibility that Tiro will come off as harsh or inhuman, he will simulate a female voice as he attempts to move proceedings along — as the logic goes, if it works for in-car GPS, why not for weddings? There’s no mention of how the bride feels about all this, so we’re assuming one of the robot’s alternate tasks is to keep her happy by acting as a personal servant until the big day: let’s just hope that she doesn’t mind if her “wedding in white” is realized via blinking LEDs.

Battery life proving problematic in adding rumble to SIXAXIS?

It’s unlikely that we’ll be the only ones thrilled to see this fiasco finally reach closure, and even though the dust has somewhat settled, the PS3 faithful are still operating sans a first-party rumbling controller. Rumors may have suggested that such a device was indeed getting ready to launch in the not too distant future, but according to a blurb at Inner Bits, battery life could be holding things up. While it doesn’t come without a tad of salt, Sony is reportedly “facing some difficulties with regard to battery life,” as sources supposedly mentioned that “the rumble and wireless support” were causing the batteries to “drain too fast to be acceptable for consumers.” Of course, there’s always the third-party alternative if you’re not picky, but those holding out for the real deal could be waiting a tick longer if this proves true.

The Easy-Glider is your personal one-wheeled electric chariot

You think you look geeky with your Bluetooth headset in your ear, and a Segway beneath your feet? Think again, as a newer, wackier mode of personal transport has appeared in the form of the Easy-Glider. This one-wheeled electric chariot won the ispo BrandNew Award — what can do more for a gadget’s geek cred than an award with a metaname like that? — and is soon to be displayed on the podium at the ispo Sport & Style 2007 in Munich, Germany. The X6 Easy-Glider has a top speed of around 12 MPH, a range of around 9 to 16 miles depending on surface conditions, and takes between six to eight hours to recharge. On top of that the Easy-Glider currently requires approval for use in Switzerland — no deets on usage in other countries — and a license plate (!) if you want to take on traffic. Yep, like the Segway, it’s totally impractical and will probably be priced way out of our non-existent budget. But we still want one.
