hipDisk converts gyrations into sound

Zany musical creations are more the rule than the exception ’round these parts, but we’ve got to give credit where it’s due, and the hipDisk most certainly takes motion-based music making to an entirely different platform. The self-proclaimed “most undignified musical instrument ever” goes about its noise making ways by utilizing soft switches on the two discs, which create a variety of chimes based on one’s movements. The design was meant to accentuate the interdependent relationship of the hip and torso and to enable “a small orchestra of hipDisked women to play chord structures together.” Oh, we’re so going to see that. Take a sneak peek of someone dancing solo after the jump.

iWalk to release PowerFoot One prosthetic foot

It looks like some researchers at MIT and Brown University are about to see the fruits of their labor become commercially available, with upstart iWalk set to release the PowerFoot One prosthetic foot jointly developed by the two. Unlike similar devices, the PowerFoot One uses “tendon-like” springs and an electric motor to help propel the person forward, which supposedly reduces fatigue, improves balance and gives the wearer with a more fluid gait. A mix of sensors and specialized control algorithms also ensure that the person stays balanced while walking on slopes or stairs. While there’s no word on what it’ll cost, it should be commercially available sometime next summer.

Altina’s A680 GPS navigator features AV input, digital camera

Those looking for a few more extras on their next navigation system have a growing number of choices, but Altina is upping the ante by cramming even more gadgetry than usual inside its A680. Specs wise, you’ll find a 400MHz Samsung processor, a four-inch 480 x 272 resolution LCD, 64MB of NAND RAM, 128MB of SDRAM, a SIRFstarIII module, integrated stereo speakers, headphone out, and an SD expansion slot for any excess media. Additionally, there’s USB connectivity, an FM transmitter, two-megapixel digital camera, AV input jack for flicks (or gaming) on the go, and a rechargeable Li-ion that should prove handy if you make your way into the wilderness. Sadly, there’s no pricing information available on this do-it-all device, but we’ve got a hunch it won’t make it outside of China anyway.
