DIYer crafts robotic flusher to save time, impress guests

Filed under:

If you’re not exactly keen on dropping a substantial amount of dough in order to grab one of those snazzy Toto toilets that flush as you walk away, why not devise your own flusher that not only removes the need to stand around and hold the handle down for ten or so seconds, but also captures data on exactly how many times you visit the lavatory. Apparently, an artful fellow decided to do just that, and the resulting robotic flusher requires but one momentary press in order to successful flush any rigged toilet. And yes, the video (crank the volume!) is awaiting you after the break.

Massive WiFi network to cover 37 cities in Silicon Valley

Filed under:

Granted, we’ve seen some sizable WiFi networks in our day, and while an entire country has claimed to have nationwide internet on the brain, the largest we’ve seen implemented here in the states span a city or so at most. Reportedly, a group of firms (including IBM and Cisco) are looking to build a $85- to $150-million outdoor WiFi network that could connect up 37 cities in Silicon Valley. The initiative will not only provide basic, free internet to those willing to deal with the ad-supported service, but it will also dish out subscriber-based signals to residents, high-speed service to businesses, and uber-secure communications to police / firefighters. As of now, the companies plan to erect test networks in Palo Alto and San Carlos later this year, with constructions of the final network to potentially begin in 2008. Just make sure Utah doesn’t get a whiff of it, capiche?

Sony shows off “Hana” speaker / lamp concept

Filed under:

As far as unusual speakers go, Sony’s new “Hana” concept is certainly less out there than some of the questionable contraptions we’ve seen, although that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s any more likely to actually be available one day. As you can see above, in addition to pumping out tunes, the Hana (that’s Japanese for flower, hence the design) also doubles as a lamp (an LED lamp, specifically), and apparently comes equipped with its own MP3 player. While you may not be able to get your hands on this one anytime soon, those in the market for a speaker/lamp combo surprisingly do have a number of other options to choose from.

Custom-made God of War PSP up for auction

Filed under:

While it may not be to everyone’s taste, this one-of-a-kind God of War PSP is certainly an impressive bit of console modding, boasting not just a spiffy paint job, but a few additions that dig into the PSP itself. Those include a red acrylic window on the rear of the unit that’ll let you see the UMD spinning, as well as some red LEDs that light up the PSP’s two shoulder buttons (head on over after the break for some more pics). Only the most die hard God of War fans need apply here though, as last we checked the bidding was around the $1,200 mark. On the upside, 15% of the final sale price will go to the Child’s Play charity, and you’ll also get that classy velvet-lined case to display your new prized possession in.
