Polycom’s HDX 4000 HD video conferencing system

Filed under:

We weren’t exactly enthralled with Polycom’s other all-in-one video conferencing machine, but a lot can change in three years. The newly revamped iteration, dubbed the HDX 4000, claims to be the “first executive desktop video system with HD voice, video, and content sharing.” Designed to play nice with most standards-based, IP video conferencing systems, this unit sports a 20-inch widescreen display, built-in HD camera with pan-tilt-zoom capability, dual HDX microphones, speakers and subwoofer, an HDX video conferencing codec, and a stand with an integrated keypad that “allows users to dial or answer video calls just like a telephone.” Depending on bandwidth, this system enables you to watch and send 720p content at 30fps (or 480p if you snag the HDX 4001), and while you aren’t likely to justify this purchase for your home, $7,999 isn’t a whole lot to ask when sprucing up the corporate boardroom.

Greenhouse’s KanaSD gets makeover, adds SDHC support

Filed under:

Oh, KanaSD, how you’ve matured over the years in front of our very eyes. The diminutive DAP from Greenhouse has evolved from a simplistic, lackluster player to one that supported flash memory, and now provides a new level of adorableness to go along with the SDHC compatibility. The device plays nice with both MP3 and WMA formats, handles flash cards up to 8GB in size, lasts about five hours on a full charge, syncs up via USB 2.0, and comes in your choice of black or silver. As if you couldn’t already guess, we’ve no idea how much this wee unit will cost when it hits the Japanese streets later this month, but it ought not be (too) much.

Samsung’s 30-inch LCD with world’s first DisplayPort — game-on HDMI

Filed under:

It’s on HDMI fans, the first LCD panel sporting a VESA-approved DisplayPort 1.1 jack was just announced by Samsung — a world’s first. The 30-inch LCD pumps a 2,560 x 1,600 pixels with a 10-bit color depth at a smokin’ data rate of 10.8Gbps over a single port. In other words, kiss your DVI (and VGA ultimately) spec goodbye as their days are numbered. In addition to the port, we’re talking about a Sammy S-PVA panel with 180-degree viewing angle, 1,000:1 contrast, 6-ms response, and 300cd/m2 brightness. Surprisingly, it’s not scheduled for production delivery until Q2 of 2008. Later than we expected especially if it’s truly the first to ship. Nevertheless, January’s CES is set to be a regular DisplayPort free-for-all with plenty of laptop support provided by Dell, HP, and Lenovo among others.

Adlink intros touchscreen embedded panel PC

Filed under:

While there’s already a number of in-wall PC options, Adlink’s NuPPC-0701T will likely become the automaters choice thanks to its integrated seven-inch, 800 x 480 resolution touchscreen LCD. This all-in-one computer measures in at just 8.39- X 5.71- X 2.87-inches, and includes a 1GHz Intel Celeron processor, Ethernet, audio in / out, 512MB of RAM, three USB ports, and a CompactFlash slot for easy expansion. The company is hoping its latest device gets shoved into applications such as kiosks, electronic manufacturing, factory automation, and transportation systems, but we see nothing wrong with rigging up your AV system, garage door opener, and electronic doggie door instead. Per usual, you’ll have to phone these guys up in regard to a price, and just in case the aforementioned specs aren’t up to your lofty standards, upgrades are certainly available at a cost.

2007 IDEA awards announced

Filed under:

The International Design Excellence Awards are in, and if you can sit through the 14 different awards given to the Eclipse 500 Very Light Jet, there are some real gems in there. We were into the LOMAK (light operated mouse and keyboard) for the physically impaired, MY_WAY Printer that prints left to right and top to bottom, the sexy HomeHero Fire Extinguisher, or the Nanopoint cellTRAY biological liquid medium. With over 80 winners it’s tough to cover all these designs here, but check out BusinessWeek’s IDEA awards site if you’re in the mood to push some of the ugly out of your day.
