Dvorak tries a Mac… he likes it!

As most everyone reading this no doubt knows, John Dvorak hasn’t exactly shown much love to Macs (and all things Apple) over the years. Mac fanboys may now want to brace themselves, however, as it seems Dvorak has had a change of heart — sorta. While he still has “no plans to move to the Mac platform for my personal use,” Dvorak has apparently been using a Mac for the past few months and, shockingly, admits to liking it. Of course, he isn’t quite exuberant in his praise, calling the system he’s been using (an iMac) “not half bad,” adding that “it’s very quiet, and it performs as well as the PC on general office applications.” He also found that “the interface is slicker,” and that he didn’t get the feeling that the computer was going to ” start acting weird because of some virus, spyware, or endless Firefox loading procedure.” But other than that, he says, he “cannot see much of a difference between the Mac and PC.” He even apparently found doing some things on the Mac, like burning CDs, “convoluted.” Despite that, he says he has taken to recommending Macs to friends and neighbors, although we somehow suspect he won’t go so far as to recommend an iPhone anytime soon.

Dell goes retail in Japan with Bic Camera

Looks like Dell is slowly spreading its newfound affection for retail around the globe, with the company today announcing a partnership with Bic Camera that’ll see a number of its systems be sold in Bic Camera stores throughout Japan. Starting in August, the retail chain will be stocking Dell’s XPS M1330, Inspiron 1520, and Inspiron 6400 laptops, along with its Inspiron 530s desktop, among other systems, apparently. This isn’t the first time the two have teamed up, however, with Dell having already established so-called “Real Site” kiosks in Bic Camera shops, which let customers order Dell systems and have them shipped directly to them. Dell apparently isn’t quite done with its retail expansion just yet though, telling us to “stay tuned for more.”

Sony unveils world’s first, ugliest HD Video Walkman

For those of you not blinded by the unsightly image above, that there is the “world’s first HD Video Walkman,” or in other terms, one of the ugliest devices we’ve seen in years. Beyond the fact that this thing resembles a decade-old handheld cassette recorder with a seven-inch HD display flanked on top, it enables users to watch their HDV / miniDV tapes on the go, which isn’t likely to entice you unless you shoot for a living. Furthermore, the GV-HD700E can record HDV1080i/DV signals from an external source, sports i.LINK / HDMI / component outputs, supports x.v.Color, and includes a Memory Stick slot for tape-to-flash card conversions. No word on just how much this curious creature will set you back, but those still fascinated can look for it to land in Europe this September.

Hitachi’s P42-HV01, L37-XR01 HDTVs sport removable iVDR-S

Cramming DVR functionality into an HDTV is nothing new, but Hitachi is blessing two of its newest sets with a removable iVDR-S drive (shown after the jump) in case you feel like plugging your theoretical DVR HDD into other compatible devices. Up first is the 42-inch plasma, which offers up a 1,024 x 1,080 resolution, three HDMI ports, digital audio output, a headphone jack, Ethernet, dual ten-watt speakers, an SD slot, and a silver stand in case you’re not keen on hoisting this up on your wall. The 37-inch LCD TV boasts a 1,920 x 1,080 Full HD resolution, 500cd/m2 brightness, 7,000:1 contrast ratio, built-in speakers, and the same port assortment as the P42-HV01. As expected, neither of these sets will come sans a stiff premium, so look for the iVDR-S-equipped PDP to land in “late October” for ¥390,000 ($3,232), while the L37-XR01 LCD arrives a month earlier at ¥350,000 ($2,901).
