Week o’ Dell scoops, Part Deux

Filed under:

Hate surprises? Like teaching kids about the Santa myth and the truth of their adoption? Good, this followup series of Dell scoops is for you. We’ll be back in a few with the first peek at Dell’s second generation Latitude XT tablet. And that’s just the beginning. Until then, why not guess what that mystery device is up top.

Hint: It’s not as innovative as it looks.

Phase One introduces elusive 645 medium format camera platform

Filed under:

It’s been a solid tick since we’ve heard any rustling in the bushes from Phase One, but the company’s striking back with a vengeance with the 645 (also known as the Mamiya 645AFDIII). Hailed as the “world’s most flexible, open medium format digital camera platform,” the unit plays nice with a smorgasbord of high-end lenses (Mamiya’s 645 family, Hasselblad V-lenses and Pentacon Six lenses, for starters), and can achieve shutter speeds from 1/4000 second to 60 minutes. Unfortunately, that’s about all the details we’re given for now, and while pre-production units are sneaking out at this week’s Photo Imaging Expo, we’ll be forced to hang tight until Q2 before indulging in full technical specifications. No worries — we figure most folks will need a quarter or so to save up, anyway. [Warning: PDF read link]

REDFLY Mobile Companion gets previewed

Filed under:

Still mourning the passing of the Foleo? You and the other couple of dozen people on earth that need something like that might find a winner in the REDFLY Mobile Companion unveiled at CES this year. The device offers external control of Windows Mobile 5 and 6 devices over Bluetooth 2.0 or USB, with a full keyboard, 8-inch 800 x 480 LCD and some USB and VGA plugs for tapping into external drives and an external monitor. ZDNet’s Matthew Miller got an early beta version of the device to test out, and while he admits he’s in the minority of people willing to shell out $500 for something like this, he was fairly impressed by the build quality and usability of the device. The biggest drawback is that you can’t use the device on its own without a phone, but if you’re a heavy browser user or need to do some serious text input, but aren’t doing anything serious enough to demand a real laptop, the REDFLY might just hit some sort of sweetspot for heavy Windows Mobile users. Or it could sell 12 units, it could really go either way.

SanDisk launches Sansa Sessions — music distribution by microSD, what else

SanDisk just dipped its toe into the digital content distribution waters with the launch of Sansa Sessions. Of course, this isn’t an on-line storefront, it’s flash-based naturally in support of SanDisk’s core business. As such, the US-based program relies upon microSD cards to distribute DRM-free tracks of unspecified quality from more than 50 “emerging artists” on more than 30 labels. At the moment, the featured artists include All Time Low, Ladytron, Magnet, Nada Surf, Of Montreal and The Coup. SanDisk has tied a free, 55 track microSD “sampler” card (of el cheapo 512MB capacity, presumably) to the purchase of its 8GB Sansa Fuze MP3 player. While the $0 cost and DRM-free aspects of Sansa Sessions are certainly appealing to us, this seems best fitted as a record / artist promotional tool than it does a replacement for web-based or over-the-air music distribution.

Alienwarez: Bios released to fix overheating Area-51 m15x rigs

Filed under:

Drop those pitchforks m15x owners and prepare to update, Alienware just released a fix to your overheating (and downclocking) problems. A new beta BIOS — X29b P3A30 — features a few tweaks including the ability to spin-up the fan to a new 5400rpm max. So more noise for more speed; sounds like a reasonable trade-off to us. Unfortunately, the new BIOS is only available if you email area51_m15x@alienware.com for a copy. A general release is expected shortly. Until then, however, it looks like all m15x shipments are on hold. Ouch.
